Historic color photograph, A Great Day in Hollywood AGDIHW (top and bottom photos), was curated and shot by photographer/ filmmaker Kwaku Alston, and; based on TWO previous, legendary, black-and-white photos shot at the SAME location, but; 40 YEARS apart.
AGDIHW was released in time for BETAwards2018, and; served as launch vehicle for STRONG BLACK LEAD (SBL), a NEW initiative from NETFLIX.
NETFLIX: SBL celebrates its BLACK creators, directors, showrunners, and and actors.
ONE singular image captures 47 BLACK Creatives standing shoulder-to-shoulder, signifying a shift toward GREATER industry opportunities for Black Hollywood.
Subsequently, NETFLIX used AGDIHW as inspiration for a 1-minute TV campaign narrated by STRANGER THINGS star Caleb McLaughlin, and, directed by Lacey Duke.
B&W photo, A Great Day in Harlem (AGDIH), was shot April 12, 1958, for ESQUIRE Magazine, by freelance photog Art Kane.
The Greatest Day In Hip Hop History (TGDIHHH) was taken September 1958, for XXL Magazine, by genius multihyphenate Gordon Parks.
Both AGDIH and TGDIHHH were photographed on the front stoop at 17 East 126th Street, Harlem, NYC, NY (b&w below).
AGDIHW (left half ⬆️, right half ⬇️) was done on a New York City-lookalike backlot at Universal Studios, Hollywood, LA, CA.
